The SWEetness of Summer… Oh the Places You’ll Go!
As the semester rolls to a close and we face the summer following a very unusual year of classes, we want to recognize those that have worked hard and are accepting research positions, co-ops, and internships for the summer!
We hope you can take advice from their searches, see the wide range of possibilities that come from being an engineering student at THE Ohio State University, and join us in celebrating each of their successes.
Outgoing OSU SWE Treasurer Bridgette Wadge is a fourth year Mechanical Engineer working at General Mills as a Manufacturing Engineering Associate Intern in Murfreesboro, TN this summer. She learned about this opportunity through a non-SWE Information Session on campus!
A piece of advice from Bridgette: “Learn from your friends that have interned at companies you’re interested in! Ask about their experiences and see if they have any contacts within the company that you can reach out to for more information.”

Outgoing OSU SWE President Katie Lenz is a fourth year Electrical and Computer Engineer working at HP Inc. as a Computer Hardware Design Engineer in Fort Collins, CO starting this summer. She learned about this opportunity at the WE19 Career Fair!
A piece of advice from Katie: “SWE Conference Career Fairs are great for getting to interact with recruiters from companies that do not traditionally recruit Ohio State students.”

Incoming OSU SWE President Kavya Narayanan is a third year Biomedical Engineer working at Proctor & Gamble as a Beauty Research & Development Intern in Mason, OH this summer. She learned about this opportunity through the SWE x P&G Professional Development Informational Session!
A piece of advice from Kavya: “Be genuine! When talking to recruiters, be yourself — not the person you think they want you to be. Companies are looking for fresh talent with a new, unique perspective. Be prepared to talk about experiences that set you apart, and they will be interested in learning more!”

Emma Rand is a third year Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineer working at GE Healthcare as a Supply Chain Intern in Milwaukee, WI this summer. She learned about this opportunity through ECS/Handshake!
A piece of advice from Emma: “Consistency is key! Go to as many events as you can for a company that you are interested in and be engaged with asking questions! Recruiters will remember you and it will help to build your network!”

Maddie Chandler is a second year Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineer working at Cargill as an Operations Management Intern in Tipton, IN this summer. She learned about this opportunity through the OSU Engineering Expo!

A piece of advice from Olivia: “Take advantage of the career fairs, info sessions, and professional development events! It is a great way to network, learn about different companies and their opportunities, and possibly get an internship.”

A piece of advice from Annalese: “Be persistent. If you didn’t get the internship right off the bat, keep updating the recruiter. They love to see people coming back, because it means they are passionate about the company! Persistence above all else gets you where you want to be!”

A piece of advice from Amber: “Focus on your ‘why’! Tell companies about what you do outside of school and commitments and share what gives you purpose. Show them why you love what you do!”

Emily McDonel is a fifth year Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineer working at Abbott in the Operations Professional Development Program. She learned about this job through a previous internship found at the Engineering Expo!
A piece of advice from Emily: “It is easy to get discouraged as rejections tend to be more prevalent than offers and it starts to ware on your self esteem. It’s important to remember that you are not defined by your GPA and are an amazing engineer. All you need is that one company to take a chance on you and then you can truly show that you are a superstar! Then the offers will come pouring in :)”

Lindsay Schmidt is a third year Materials Science Engineer working at Trane Technologies as a Sales Engineering Intern in Columbus, OH this summer. She learned about this opportunity through ECS/Handshake!
A piece of advice from Lindsay: “Remember the people interviewing you have been in your shoes at one point too! Go into it knowing it is your time to brag on yourself so be confident in your skills!!”

To put it plainly: this year wasn’t easy. We faced an entire year of online classes, burnout, rejections, and never-ending regulation changes. But, we managed to push through– now, we are coming together to support widespread University Vaccination efforts, celebrate a successful year of online engagement, and amazing opportunities despite the hardships.
We are incredibly proud of everyone who has graduated this past Winter and Spring, everyone excited for their coming work this summer, and everyone who didn’t get to sign a company contract but aren’t giving up hope for the future.
