Summer Destinations: Oh the Places You’ll Go!
So excited for our SWE members who are taking on internships, co-ops, and those who are graduating with full time jobs!! So proud of everyone and we want to share your accomplishments.
We hope this list of summer destinations gives our members a point of contact in nearby cities, or a contact for a specific job or company! It also includes where the members learned about the opportunity and pieces of advice for the job/internship finding process.
Rachel Spector(Spector.50) is a 4+ year Electrical and Computer Engineering major! She learned about this opportunity through Engineering Career Services / Handshake! She will be working at Cisco Systems in San Jose, CA. She will be working as a Worldwide Sales Systems Engineer Intern for 10 weeks from June — August. A piece of advice from Rachel: Don’t be afraid to apply to a wide variety of jobs/job titles because you never know what you’ll end up liking. I never thought I’d be in a sales role, but I love it! A fun fact about Rachel: Outside of school I work as an ice girl for the Blue Jackets! @rachspector Thanks Rachel, congrats & good luck!
Catherine Adams (Adams.1805) is a 4+ year Mechanical Engineering major. She originally interviewed at Procter & Gamble’s booth at Societal Conference! She will be working full-time at Procter & Gamble in Albany, GA as a Family Care Engineer. Her advice to other engineers: Be honest with yourself when job searching- if you aren’t excited about the job you’re applying for the recruiters will know! Take the time to find a position that sounds genuinely interesting to you, even if that means prolonging your search. It’s worth it in the end!! A fun fact about Catherine: I’m planning on running my 4th half marathon this spring! @catadams4 Congrats Catherine and good luck!
Ruksana Kabealo (Kabealo.21) is a 3rd year Computer Science and Engineering major. She learned about this opportunity through the Grace Hopper Conference. She will be working at Target in Minneapolis, Minnesota as a Software Engineering Intern from June 3rd, 2019 — August 9th, 2019. Her advice: Never give up! The search for internships/co-ops/jobs can be filled with rejection and disappointment. Staying determined enough to make it through all that already puts you one step ahead of the game. Fun Fact about Ruksana: I love writing poetry! I have work published in Ohio’s Best Emerging Poets: An Anthology for 2017 and in several student literary magazines. @ruksanakay Congrats Ruksana and good luck!
Claire Penrose (Penrose .24) is a 3rd year Chemical Engineering major! She learned about this opportunity through the Engineering Expo. She will be working at Anheuser-Buschin St. Louis this summer as a Brewery Training Program Intern. A piece of advice from Claire: Make sure you know about the company and what aspects of the culture and job you are interested in and like and be willing to talk about it! Amanda Slager (Slager.8) is a 3rd year Chemical Engineering major. She learned about this opportunity from the Engineering Expo. She will be working at the J.M. Smucker Co. in Cincinnati, OH as a Process Engineering Intern from May 2019 — August 2019. Advice from Amanda: Be confident. Even if you’re just a first year or a second year or don’t think you’re qualified for a job, be confident in yourself and believe that you are going to get the job. Employers will recognize that and will be more likely to ask you to interview. Also, show that you’re passionate about the job. Shannon Maloney (Maloney.204) is a 3rd year Industrial and Systems Engineering major! She learned about this opportunity through her adviser. She will be working at DHL in Westerville, Ohio as a Solutions Design Intern. This is a unique opportunity since DHL is located close to campus, she will be working part-time starting January for the spring semester, then work full time in the summer, then part-time again in the fall. Advice from Shannon: Use every interview opportunity as a chance to improve your interview skills! Every interview helps you build confidence and become more comfortable in an interview setting! Fun Fact: This year, I have flown on more planes than I have over my whole life combined @shannnonn_2

Anna Posta (Posta.5) is a 2nd year Chemical Engineering major. She learned about this opportunity through the Engineering Expo. She will be working at Eaton in Denver, Colorado as a Technical Sales Intern from May 17-August 9th. Advice from Anna: Have an open mind! Apply to positions out of your comfort zone, you never know what you will end up liking! Fun Fact: I was once a ball girl for the US Women’s National Soccer Team! @anna_posta

Sydney Demechko (Demechko.3) is a 2nd year Electrical and Computer Engineering major. She learned about this opportunity through the Engineering Expo. She will be working at Honda in Marysville, Ohio as a Electrical Engineering Intern for 14 weeks from 5/20/19–8/16/19. Advice from Sydney: Go to the career fair!!! (And make sure to be yourself ) Also make sure to utilize the online applications, some people don’t think applying online will do much but that’s where I got most of my interviews! Dana Gill (Gill.475) is a 3rd year Industrial and Systems Engineering major. She learned about this opportunity through the Company Website. She will be working at JPMorgan Chase & Co. in Columbus, Ohio as a Leadership Development Program Analyst. Her Internship is June 3rd, 2019 to August 9th, 2019. Advice from Dana: To anyone going through an internship, I recommend immersing yourself in the company. By this I mean getting involved in their philanthropy, volunteer-work, professional development events, or social events. Doing this during my internships has helped me create personal relationships with my co-workers and become more passionate about the work the company does. Katie Lenz (Lenz.64) is a 2nd year Electrical and Computer Engineering major. She learned about this opportunity from the Engineering Expo. She will be working at Northrop Grumman in Baltimore, Maryland as a Mission Systems Electrical Engineering Intern(Hardware) for 10 weeks from May 28th — August 2nd. Advice from Katie: Even if you aren’t sure that a company will want you, still go and talk to them! You never know what the recruiters are looking for and it very well may turn out to be you. And if not you can still learn valuable information about what they do look for in interns/employees. Rachael Sweetman (Sweetman.13) is a 3rd year Computer Science and Engineering major. She learned about this opportunity through Engineering Career Services / Handshake. She will be working for Nike in Portland, Oregon as a Nike Technology Intern for 12 weeks from May-August. Advice from Rachael: Apply to places you don’t think you’ll stand a chance being noticed at, you never know what’ll happen! Kara McLaughlin is a 3rd year Civil Engineering major. She learned about this opportunity from an Information Session on Campus. She will be working at Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber in Columbus, Ohio as a Seasonal (Co-op) Technician in the Transportation Department for 14 weeks from May-August 2019. Advice from Kara: Research companies before you meet them. Don’t let not having the right experience needed for a position stop you from applying or networking with a company. You never know when a conversion with a company representative can lead to a great opportunity! Rachel Chodikov (Chodikov.1) is a 4th year Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering major. She learned about this opportunity at the SWE Conference! She will be working full-time at Accenture in Detroit, MI as Consulting Analyst starting in August 2019! Advice from Rachel: Do not give up! It can be challenging sometimes to stay positive, but keep pushing forward and everything will fall into place! Fun Fact: I went to Costa Rica on a service trip this past December! @rachelchodikov

Madison Weiss (Weiss.546) is a 1st year Electrical and Computer Engineering major. She found this opportunity through a scholarship she won in high school! She will be working at Parker Hannifin in Elyria, OH as a Fluid and Brakes Engineering Intern for 12 weeks from 5/22/19–8/7/19. Advice from Madison: Always apply for the internship even if you do not think you will be qualified, many companies are willing to take a chance on an under qualified student who they know is willing to learn on the job! Fun Fact: I volunteered at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo for four years and became certified in holding many animals including bearded dragons, armadillos, and children’s pythons. @matts_3

Bridgette Wadge (Wadge.3) is a 2nd year Mechanical Engineering major! She learned about this opportunity through the Engineering Expo. She will be working at Allegion in Indianapolis, Indiana as a Mechanical Engineering Intern for 13 weeks from May 13 — August 9. Advice from Bridgette: If you think a company at a career fair will just tell you “apply online,” do that in advance of going to the booth! Saying “I already have, what can I do next?” keeps you in the conversation rather than just walking away from a company you really like. Janani Subramanian (Subramanian.153) is a 2nd year Mechanical Engineering major! She learned about this opportunity from Engineering Career Services / Handshake. She will be working at Goodyear in Akron, OH as a Global Technology Intern at Goodyear (5/3/19–8/1/19). Advice from Janani: It’s never too early to start looking! The earlier you start researching companies and applying online, the higher your chances of finding an internship that’s right for you. This will for sure take some stress off of career fair week as well! Personally, I found keeping an excel document with information about companies, applications, and offers helpful. Harper Calhoun (Calhoun.210) is a 3rd year Biomedical Engineering major! She learned about this opportunity through the SWE Career Fair! She will be working at MSA Safety in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as a Mechanical Engineering Co-op for 12 weeks from May 13-August 13. Advice from Harper: Don’t be afraid to reach out to companies and even if you don’t qualify, still apply! Fun Fact: I’m a master scuba diver

Lauren Klenk (Klenk.26) is a 2nd year Aeronatuical or Astronautical Engineering major. She learned about this opportunity through the SWE Career Fair. She will be working at Dynetics in Huntsville, Alabama as a Propulsion Engineer Trainee. Her Internship will run from May-August. Victoria Black (Black.819) is a 3rd year Materials Science and Engineering major. She learned about this opportunity at the Societal Conference Career Fair. She will be working at Celanese in Florence, KY as a Materials Science Intern from 5/13/19–8/15/10. Megan Hart (Hart.744) is a 2nd year Mechanical Engineering major. She learned about this opportunity from Engineering Career Services / Handshake. She will be interning at GE Aviation in Boston, MA as a Engineering Services Intern for 12 weeks from 5/7–7/2. Advice from Megan: Don’t let rejection discourage you! I remember going to companies as a freshmen and being turned down again and again. Keep putting yourself out there, even if you don’t get that internship you wanted you will grow and learn new professional networking skills out of that experience! Thushara Thomas (Thomas.3303) is a 4th year Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering major. She found this opportunity by talking to a professor. She will be working at 3Bar Biologics in Columbus, OH as an R&D Intern for12 weeks from May 13th — August 2nd. Advice from Thushara: Don’t be afraid to look at startups and small business! You get to see so much more of the company, including the business side, and be an integral part of the team. You also get a lot more face time with higher ups like CEOs and Principal Scientists. Protiva Rahman (Rahman.92) is a Graduate Student in Computer Science and Engineering. She learned about this opportunity from a Professional Conference. She will be working at the National Center for Biotechnology Information, NLM, NIH in Bethesda, MD as a Research Intern for 14 weeks from May 6th-August 9th, 2019. Advice from Protiva: Networking is key — don’t be afraid to go up to strangers and introduce yourself. Don’t worry about standing out, it can be as simple as saying what your major is or what got you interested in it. Showing up gets you 80% of the way! Karley Zimmerman (Zimmerman.615) is a 4th year Industrial and Systems Engineering major! She learned about this opportunity through Engineering Career Services / Handshake. She will be working at Parker Hannifin in Marysville, Ohio as a Manufacturing Engineering Intern for 10 weeks from May 20 — Aug 16. Advice from Karley: Do your research! It’s important in interviews that the company knows you’re invested. Scour their website and generate questions for them based on their company values and current project. Make sure you love what you do, ask questions, and stay true to yourself and your values!
