Some tips for your header, summary and experience LinkedIn section.

Please keep in mind that these are just tips & by all means nothing you must “have” to implement.

Header Tips:

For a student with limited professional experience, it can be difficult to know what to put in a LinkedIn headline.

  1. Utilize the 120 characters to the best of your abilities.
  2. Include what your studying, what exactly you are seeking, some of your hard skills.
  3. Try to put in any relevant information that would stick out to a recruiter who is hiring for a job that you are or would be interested in.

Summary Tips:

  1. By including a summary, your profile will become more visible to potential employers.
  2. Keep summary short but effective. It is to show people who you are other than your experience.
  3. Some ideas of things you can write about or include:

— Passion for something that ties back to your major or encompasses a lot of qualities you possess

— Why you chose your major

— A condensed elevator pitch that highlights some main qualities that can be supported by your experience

Experience Tips:

  1. Put any work experiences that you have had. This is important as a student because majority do not have industry experience. They show your soft skills which are equally important as hard skills. The further you get in your career, you can choose to remove those that were earlier on that are not relevant to your career.
  2. Have a maximum of 3 bullet points about your experience. Keep them extremely concise. Include numbers and any big achievements or projects.
  3. Utilize unique action words right off the bat to catch the eye of the reader. (More on this next post).
