Major: FABE
Minor: Dance
Graduated: 2012
Currently works for: Accenture
Job Title: Technology Consulting Manager
Currently living in: New York
What do you do at your job?
Currently I’m on a project based in London, helping a commercial bank implement a new Salesforce-based loan origination system. My role is the Functional Lead, working as the liaison between the clients who will use the system and the developers building it. I understand the business and technology specifications and can speak to both sides to ensure the system functions properly.
What is your favorite part about your job?
I love getting to work with different people from varying backgrounds. Whether it’s the clients, vendor partners, or other internal colleagues, I’ve learned a lot from the diverse teams I’ve been a part of on my projects. Some of the travel perks aren’t too bad either (though I do get homesick sometimes).
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
A little more settled than I am now — I moved from Columbus to New York to get a change of scenery and because I wasn’t ready to put down roots, so to speak, and I’m guessing I’ll revert back eventually. Probably doing consulting in some capacity, though who knows what the future holds.
What was your favorite part about being in SWE at Ohio State? What were some of the events you were involved in?
The network SWE provides, both professionally and personally; having other women who had been or were in my shoes that I could lean on for support is a large part of why I stuck with engineering in undergrad and why I’m still involved with SWE today. I also enjoyed traveling to the Society and Regional (now WELocal) conferences. Exploring new cities and getting to meet people from other schools and areas of the country/world was a really cool experience.
Did you do an internship while at OSU?
At the time, I thought I was going to end up in grad school, so I worked in one of the FABE research labs, mostly assisting with water conservation efforts.
What did you do in undergrad that best helped you prepare for your career/future?
In my experience, it hasn’t been the specifics that I learned in my classes during undergrad, but rather the skills I learned such as thinking on my feet, working with teams, etc. that have benefited me the most. Also having leadership roles within SWE helped me find my voice and be confident in my abilities.
Do you have any advice for current SWE members? What do you wish you knew in college?
I wish I would’ve taken more advantage of the resources available to me earlier on in undergrad. It took me too long to get the courage to reach out and ask for advice, when there’s nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it.
